Energy-efficient windows in Agua Fria

Making an older Agua Fria home easier to heat and cool

Thick adobe walls hold warmth and coolness well, which makes the windows the weak point in many older homes here. Single panes and loose sashes can undo much of what the walls do. Fixing that doesn't always mean replacing every window.

Working with adobe, not against it

Earthen walls soak up the day's heat and release it slowly overnight. Windows that let in winter sun on the south side help charge that mass, while east and west glass with stronger solar control keeps summer rooms from overheating. We recommend glass by direction with that in mind.

Deep window reveals also give natural shade. On a recessed south window, a high-solar-gain glass often makes more sense than it would on a flush-mounted one.

Stopping the drafts

Much of the heat lost through an old window goes around it, not through the glass. When we install a new unit, the gap between the frame and the adobe is filled with low-expansion foam and the joints are sealed inside and out. With interior storms, a snug fit to the existing trim does the same job.

  • Glass with NFRC-rated performance
  • Units built for Santa Fe's elevation
  • Sealing that stays flexible as walls move

Agua Fria efficiency questions

Are interior storm windows worth it?

For original windows you want to keep, they're a good middle ground. They cut drafts and add an insulating air layer without changing how the house looks from outside, and they can come out in summer.

Which windows should I replace first?

Usually those in the rooms you use most that are uncomfortable, and any on the west side that overheat in summer. We'll help you rank them during the visit.

Will new windows make our adobe too airtight?

New windows reduce drafts but don't seal a house the way a modern build is sealed. If you have gas appliances or a wood stove, keep using any existing ventilation, and we'll point out anything that looks like it needs attention.

Warmer winters inside those thick walls.
