Energy-efficient windows in Rancho Viejo

Cooler afternoons and warmer winters in your Rancho Viejo home

With almost no shade trees and nothing blocking the horizon, homes out here get the full force of the afternoon sun in summer and the full sweep of the wind in winter. The right glass and a tight installation take the edge off both.

Where the energy goes in a typical house here

West-facing glass

Living rooms and bedrooms with big west windows heat up fast from mid-afternoon on. That's where solar-control glass earns its keep.

Air leaks

Wind pushes air through worn weatherstrip and gaps around frames, and pulls warm air out in winter.

Failed glass seals

Once a double-pane unit fogs, its gas fill has leaked out and it insulates little better than a single pane.

How we plan an efficiency upgrade

  1. 1

    Walk the house by direction

We note which rooms overheat, which stay cold and which windows face the view, since those you'll want as clear as possible.

  2. 2

    Match glass to each wall

West and east glass gets a coating that blocks more summer heat. South glass can let more winter sun in. North windows are chosen mainly to hold heat.

  3. 3

    Seal the whole opening

Low-expansion foam fills the gap around each frame, and the exterior joint is sealed against the stucco so wind can't find a way around the new window.

Reading the label

Every window we quote has an NFRC label showing its U-factor, which measures how well it holds heat, and its solar heat gain coefficient, which measures how much sun heat it lets through. We'll show you those numbers for each option so you can compare glass choices on more than the sales sheet.

Glass is also ordered for the elevation here, so sealed units don't bulge or strain from the pressure difference between the factory and your home.

Rancho Viejo efficiency questions

Will darker solar-control glass spoil my mountain view?

Modern low-E coatings are nearly clear. Some options have a slight tint, so we bring samples to hold up against your view before you choose.

Should I use the same glass on every side of the house?

You can, but it's rarely ideal. Glass that keeps a west room cool will also block welcome winter sun on the south side, so we usually recommend different coatings by direction.

How much will new windows cut my utility bill?

It varies too much to promise a number. It depends on how leaky and how old your current windows are, how many you replace and how you heat and cool. Most owners notice the comfort difference first.
