Windows, glass & our climate
How do I know if my windows need replacing?
Common signs are drafts, fogging between the panes, windows that stick or won't stay open, rotted or warped frames, single-pane glass, and rooms that are too hot in summer or too cold in winter. We'll look at each window and tell you honestly which ones need attention.
What is low-E glass, and do I need it in Santa Fe?
Low-E (low-emissivity) glass has a microscopically thin coating that reflects heat and blocks most UV light. With Santa Fe's strong high-altitude sun and cold nights, low-E glass helps keep homes more comfortable and reduces fading of floors and furniture. Different coatings can be chosen for different sides of the house.
Does the altitude affect my windows?
It can. Sealed insulated glass made at low elevation can be stressed by the lower air pressure at about 7,000 feet. Glass for high-altitude homes is often built with capillary or breather tubes, or made for the elevation. We take this into account when ordering, and we'll explain how it affects glass options such as gas fills.
What's the difference between vinyl, fiberglass and wood-clad?
Vinyl is the most budget-friendly and needs very little upkeep. Fiberglass is very stable through heat and cold and allows slimmer frames and dark colors. Wood-clad gives you real wood inside with low-maintenance cladding outside, and is often a good match for traditional and historic homes. Compare them here.
Can you replace just the fogged glass instead of the whole window?
Often, yes. If the frame and sash are in good shape, replacing the insulated glass unit can be a good-value repair. If several windows are failing or the frames are worn, replacement is usually the better investment. More on repairs.
Historic districts & adobe homes
My home is in a historic district. Can I replace my windows?
Often, yes, but exterior changes in Santa Fe's historic districts may need review and approval from the city before work begins. Depending on the project, that review may be handled by Historic Preservation Division staff or go before the Historic Districts Review Board (H-Board). We can help you prepare, but the approval decision belongs to the city.
How do I find out if my home is in a historic district?
Choose "Not sure" on our estimate form and we'll help you find out before your consultation. You can also check with the City of Santa Fe's Historic Preservation Division.
Can you fit new windows into thick adobe walls?
Yes. Adobe and frame-and-stucco homes often have deep, slightly irregular openings. We measure each one individually and plan the window position, sill, jamb extensions and the plaster or stucco finish so the new window fits properly and looks right.
Pricing, installation & warranty
