Historic & adobe homes
Windows and doors that respect Santa Fe's architecture
Thick walls, deep sills, hand-plastered returns and historic-district rules call for careful measuring and the right products. That's the kind of work we plan for.
Pueblo Revival & Territorial
Deep openings need a custom fit
Pueblo Revival homes, with their rounded parapets, vigas and earth-toned walls, and Territorial homes, with brick-capped parapets and painted wood trim, are often built with thick adobe or frame-and-stucco walls. Window openings can be deep, slightly out of square, and different from one another.
Replacement windows have to be fitted to those openings. We measure each one individually and plan:
- Window size and placement within the wall depth
- Jamb extensions and deep sills (wood, tile or plaster)
- How interior plaster and exterior stucco returns will be finished
- Profiles and divided-lite patterns that suit the style of the house
Historic districts
Working with the H-Board
Santa Fe has several historic districts, including the Downtown and Eastside district. In these districts, exterior changes such as replacing windows or doors may need review and approval from the city before work begins.
Depending on the project and how your building is classified, review may be handled by the city's Historic Preservation Division staff or go before the Historic Districts Review Board (H-Board). Requirements can cover materials, divided-lite patterns, trim and how much of the original fabric is kept.
We can help you through the process:
- Check early whether your address is in a historic district
- Recommend products and details likely to fit the guidelines
- Provide product specifications, drawings and photos for your application
- Plan the schedule so nothing is ordered before it's approved

Good fits for historic and adobe homes
Wood-clad windows are often a good match for traditional profiles, but fiberglass and other options may be appropriate too. It depends on your home and district.
