Doors in Eldorado

Eldorado doors that stand up to a gust off the open grassland

With little to slow it down between the Galisteo Basin and the foothills, the wind around Eldorado can catch an opening door and slam it against the wall, or push dust under a worn sweep. Choosing and hanging a door here starts with which way it swings and what stops it.

Swing, stops and closers

An out-swinging door on the windward side can be torn from your hand in a strong gust. Depending on the location, we may suggest an in-swing door, a sturdy stop or closer, or simply moving the hinge side so the wind pushes the door closed rather than open.

We look at prevailing wind and how the entry is sheltered before recommending a configuration.

Keeping the grit out

Dirt roads and open ground mean fine dust in the air for much of the spring. An adjustable threshold, a solid sweep and compression weatherstripping all around the door are worth more here than almost anywhere in town.

Eldorado door questions

Should our front door swing in or out in Eldorado's wind?

For most exposed entries, an in-swing door is easier to control in a gust and seals well when closed. If out-swing makes more sense for the space, a heavy-duty closer or stop keeps it from being caught by the wind.

Can a door between our sunspace and living room be better insulated?

Yes. An insulated, weatherstripped door with insulated glass lets you close off the sunspace on cold nights without losing the daytime warmth you want to share.

Do Eldorado covenants say anything about door colors?

Covenants and their architectural guidelines may cover exterior colors and materials. Check yours before choosing a finish, and we'll provide samples and specs for any approval you need.

Ready for doors that don't fight the wind?

We'll look at exposure, swing direction and seals at every Eldorado doorway, then price what each one needs.
